The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism in Nigeria and attempting to expand its influence in West Africa through extremist movements.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, Freeman alleged that some groups operating in Nigeria, including the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, receive ideological or operational backing from Tehran. He cited statements by Ali Khamenei as evidence of Iran’s support for such movements. According to him, Iran’s activities form part of a broader global agenda involving support for militant groups and destabilising campaigns in several regions.
Freeman also addressed tensions in the Middle-East, saying Israel’s actions against Iran are driven by security concerns over Tehran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programmes. He argued that Iran’s repeated calls for Israel’s destruction make it necessary for the country to act in self-defence.
The envoy further accused the Iranian government of supporting violent networks globally and using force against protesters at home.
Despite the tensions, Freeman said Israel remains committed to strengthening cooperation with Nigeria in areas such as security, intelligence sharing, agriculture, health, and technology.
